On the Language Features of English Contract Translation

Abstract: Legal English emphasizes precise wording, fluent writing and abundant information. Its expression is obscure and the structure is complicated. The features of English law are widely criticized and also cause tremendous difficulties for understanding and application. English contract, a legal document which has instant effectiveness, clearly defines the responsibilities, rights and benefits of the parties, so its language is considerably different from general language. This paper seeks to analyze the lexical and syntactic features of English contract so as to better assist legal translation.

Zenet, an Endangered Language Variety in Southern Algeria

Abstract: In the Tuat, southern Algeria, Arabic is the major language variety; whereas, Zenet is a minor dialect neither taught at school nor promoted at the societal level. The objective of the present paper is to give a glimpse about the sociolinguistic changes that are underway in the Tuat, such as the actual position of Zenet at the institutional and societal levels, through objective measurements such as the national census, the school, and the radio programs. The paper focuses on the recent developments underwent by Zenet at the Radio of Adrar since 2006. This variety of Tamazight is witnessing an evolution in the program schedules and frequencies of broadcast, but no noticeable changes on the educational and the social levels. Hence, Zenet may be considered as an endangered language variety, since it does not receive governmental and institutional supports nor any local encouragement and promotion.

Use of Citations and Status Titles in South Algerians’ Final Projects

Abstract: In a global world where English is the main means of international communication, the use of the latter language variety has positive as well as negative impacts on its learners as a foreign language. Starting from this observation, the present paper/communication describes some methodological drawbacks found in the final projects of fourth year students. In particular, we analyse the use of status titles such as ‘doctor-ustaadh-sheikh’ as instances of the mix between English standards of referencing and Arabic ones. And last but not least, we consider the frequency of use of Arabic, English, French, and electronic sources as bibliographical citations to objectively measure the ever-increasing impact of the internet on the teaching/learning processes. This small-scale research is based on a corpus made up of 190 final projects submitted for viva voce during the period extending from 1999 to 2011. Though unbalanced, the sample consists of 171 female students and 39 young males from nine different graduation years. A straight result is the significant use of Arabic, English, French, and electronic sources by the girls.
